SEO migration services: change your site, keep your rankings.
A new website can look perfect and still wipe out years of Google rankings on launch day. Web designers often focus on how it looks, not on which old pages were bringing in customers. I make sure every page that earns traffic has a proper home on the new site.
Launch day decides the next year.
Illustration of a typical pattern, not client data.
- What: protect rankings when you change domain, platform, URLs or design.
- When: before design starts. The later I come in, the less I can protect.
- Expect: a small, short dip even when done well. Big losses are avoidable.
- Already launched? Traffic losses can often still be recovered.
What is an SEO migration?
An SEO migration is a planned move of a website to a new domain, platform, design or URL structure, done so that it keeps its search rankings. Google has learned where your pages live. When those addresses change with no clear directions, you can lose the rankings and links those pages earned. Good migration work gives Google those directions and checks that they work.
Not all moves carry the same risk.
| Project | Risk to rankings | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New design, same URLs | Low to medium | Content or structure changes can still cost rankings |
| New URLs on the same domain | Medium | Every URL needs a redirect |
| New platform, such as WordPress to Shopify | Medium to high | URLs, templates and speed all change at once |
| New domain name | High | Google has to transfer trust to a new name |
| Merging several sites | High | Many overlaps, and careful choices about what to keep |
How risky is your project?
Eight quick checks. This is a guide based on what commonly goes wrong, not a precise forecast.
Moving a site is like moving house with no forwarding address.
If you move and leave no forwarding address, your mail is lost. Your customers, Google and every site that ever linked to you are all still sending people to the old address.
Redirects are that forwarding address. Miss a page and its rankings and links go with it. Send everything to your homepage and Google may treat them as errors anyway.
Also, the most valuable old pages are often not obvious. An odd blog post from 2019 may bring in more customers than your main service page. A new sitemap made by a designer will not know that. Search Console will.

What I handle start to finish.
Full URL inventory
Crawls, sitemaps, Analytics and Search Console combined, so we find every page that has traffic or links, including ones the menu forgot.
Redirect map
Each old URL mapped to the closest new page. One to one wherever possible.
Staging site checks
Titles, content, schema, internal links, speed and mobile, tested before the new site goes public.
Benchmarks
Rankings, traffic and top pages recorded, so we can prove what changed.
Launch-day support
Redirects tested live, noindex tags removed, sitemaps submitted, and the Change of Address tool used if the domain is moving.
Post-launch monitoring
Errors, indexing and rankings watched daily at first, with fixes as problems show up.
A redirect map is a list of promises to Google.
It is not glamorous, and it is the piece that saves your rankings.
Before, during and after launch.
- 6+ weeks before
Inventory, benchmarks, and SEO notes on the new design and structure.
- 3 to 4 weeks before
Redirect map finished, staging site reviewed, problems sent to your developer.
- Launch day
Redirects go live and get tested. Blocks come off. Sitemaps go to Google.
- First 2 weeks
Daily checks for errors, missing pages and dropped rankings.
- Up to 3 months
Weekly reviews against your benchmark until traffic settles.
What a good migration looks like afterward.
Google begins finding your new URLs. Some rankings jump around, which is normal.
A small dip is common. Errors are found and fixed quickly.
Traffic returns toward your benchmark. New speed or structure improvements start to help.
The fall can be steep and last for many months. Some of the lost value may never fully return.
Who needs SEO migration help, and who does not.
You need this if
- Search brings in meaningful traffic or sales today.
- You are changing domain, platform or URLs.
- Your designer has not asked for a list of top pages.
- Traffic has fallen since a recent launch.
You do not need this if
- Your site gets almost no search traffic. There is little to lose, so keep it simple.
- You are only changing colors and images, with the same URLs and content.
- You are launching a brand-new business with no old site.
- A small site where you can map the few redirects yourself using the steps here.
The launch-day mistakes that cost the most.
The staging site's block goes live and Google drops your site. It happens more often than you would think.
Google often treats these as soft 404s, so the old pages' value is lost.
Those pages may be earning links and customers. Check the data before you cut anything.
Domain, design, content and structure all at once makes problems hard to trace.
Keep them for at least a year, and longer if old links still point at them.
If you did not record rankings before launch, you cannot prove what changed.
What I can show you and what I cannot.
I do not yet have a published migration case study to show here, so I will not pretend to. What I can show you is how I work: send me your current site and your plans, and I will give you a written list of the specific risks I can see, before you pay for anything. You can also judge my technical work on the technical SEO page.

What changes the price
- How many URLs are moving.
- What is changing: design, domain, platform or all three.
- How much time remains before launch.
- Whether your developer applies the redirects or I do.
