Google treats a link from a trusted site as a vote for yours. Most link packages sell the opposite: weak blogs that exist only to sell links, in a report you are not meant to look at closely. I build links you could happily show anyone.
Illustration only: the right mix depends on your niche and on what the top sites have.
Link building is the work of getting other websites to link to yours. Search engines still use links as one of their main signs of trust. One relevant link from a site with real readers can do more than a hundred from sites built to sell links. The skill is in finding the right sites and giving them a reason to link to you.
Most agencies use the same words for very different things. Here is what each one really means.
| Type | What it is | Best for | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guest articles | A useful article on a relevant site, with a link to you | Steady, relevant links | Low if the sites are real |
| Link insertions (niche edits) | A link added to an existing article | Faster, on pages already indexed | Medium. Choose carefully |
| Digital PR | Data, stories or expert comment that journalists cover | Top-tier links, brand mentions | Low, but it costs the most |
| Local links | Chambers, suppliers, sponsors, local press | Local rankings | Low |
| Competitor gap | Earn links from sites already linking to your rivals | A clear target list | Low |
| Private blog networks | Fake sites built to sell links | Quick short-term bumps | High. I do not sell this |
If you and a competitor both have a solid page on the same topic, Google needs a reason to prefer one. Often that reason is who else trusts each site.
That is why content alone can stall on page two. It is also why a well-linked site can rank with average content, which is frustrating, but it is how the system works.
One weak link in a long chain can also matter in the other direction. A pile of spam links will not usually sink you, since Google mostly ignores them, but it does waste your money and can make a manual penalty more likely.

Someone offered you a link? Run the site through these six checks first.
Paste the site into Ahrefs' or Semrush's free checker to see its traffic. Domain rating alone can be faked, and traffic is much harder to fake.
Tick what is true about the site offering you a link.
What you have, what is risky, and what your top 3 competitors have that you do not.
Every site is checked for traffic and relevance. You can veto any of them.
Real emails to real editors, not mass templates.
Articles written for the site's readers, with a natural link in context.
Mostly brand and plain phrases, not 50 exact keywords that look bought.
Monthly list of live links, with the date and the target page.
I list the sites linking to your top competitors and sort them by what is realistic for you.
Links go to pages that earn money, or to guides that pass value to them.
You see the targets first. Anything you dislike gets dropped.
Personal emails to editors, and useful content for their readers.
Every live URL each month. If a link disappears, I tell you.
Audit, target list and first outreach. No ranking changes yet, and that is normal.
First links go live. Google finds them over time. Less competitive pages may begin to rise.
Clear movement on the pages you targeted. Page two rankings start to reach page one.
Your site grows stronger overall, so new pages rank faster. The effect builds on itself.
| Task | Do it yourself? | Why people hire it out |
|---|---|---|
| Ask suppliers and partners | Yes, start today | It is limited to the people you know |
| Claim unlinked mentions | Yes | Finding them needs tools |
| Join local groups | Yes | Few of these exist per city |
| Cold outreach to editors | Slow, but possible | Reply rates are low until you have the skill and contacts |
| Digital PR | Hard | It needs media contacts and real data |
The score can be inflated. Look at real traffic and what the site publishes.
If a seller will not show the sites first, there is a reason.
This is one of the clearest patterns for Google to spot.
Your service and product pages need links too.
