Your business name, address and phone number appear on dozens of sites you did not set up. Some are old and some are wrong. A customer calling a dead number is the obvious cost, and a less obvious one is that Google trusts you less. I find them, fix them and add the ones that matter.
Example business, for illustration.
A local citation is any online mention of your business name, address and phone number, known as your NAP. Structured citations are directory listings with fields for your details, such as Yelp or Apple Business Connect. Unstructured citations are mentions in articles or on sponsor pages. Google uses them to confirm that your business is real, active and located where you say it is.
Compare your Google details with any other listing. Try it with your own.
Paste your details from Google, then from any other listing.
Checks in your browser only. Small differences such as St and Street are normal, and the tool ignores them.
Data sources sell business details to hundreds of directories. So one old address can spread to sites you have never heard of, and correcting it in one place does not correct the others.
Rebrands, new phone numbers, tracking numbers and past marketing companies all add more versions. Some directories also create listings on their own.
None of this is hard. It is just slow and dull, which is why most businesses never finish it, and why it can be a real gap between you and the company above you.

Every version of your name, address and phone I can find online, in one sheet you keep.
Old listings and merged businesses found and fixed, or reported where a platform allows it.
Google, Apple, Bing, Facebook, Yelp, BBB and others, set up with complete details.
The ones customers in your trade really use, not a generic list.
Chambers, associations and sponsors, where a mention also carries real trust.
Where each listing lives, who controls it, and what changed.
Your legal name, real address and main phone, written down.
Search your name, old names, old numbers and old addresses.
The main platforms and data sources first, so errors stop spreading.
Major, then niche, then local, checked against your top competitors.
A sheet showing each listing, its status and its login.
Customers find the right phone and address. This alone can recover missed calls.
Directories update, some of them slowly. Google picks up corrected details over time.
Often a small lift in local rankings, especially if your details were badly mismatched.
Beyond the listings that matter, more citations add very little. Reviews and your Google profile will do more.
| Task | Do it yourself? | Why people hire it out |
|---|---|---|
| Search for your old details | Yes | It is easy to miss some |
| Update your top 10 listings | Yes, an afternoon | Verification can be slow |
| Fix data sources | Possible | It takes time to learn who feeds whom |
| Remove duplicates | Slow | Each platform has its own process |
| Find niche directories | With research | Telling real from junk takes experience |
Keep your main number as the listed one. Use tracking only in ways the platform allows.
Use your real business name, or you risk a suspension on Google.
Most of those sites have no visitors, and some are spam.
Listings set up by an old agency can be hard to recover. Keep the accounts in your name.

“Citations are the least exciting thing I do, and I will not pretend they are magic. But I have seen businesses lose calls for years to a wrong number on one big site. Check yours today.”
