When someone searches for a lawyer nearby, Google shows three firms on a map before anything else. Getting into those three is usually the fastest route to new cases, and most firms have not finished the basics that decide it.
Google names these three factors in its own help pages. Circle sizes are illustrative: you control relevance and prominence, and distance you mostly cannot change.
Local SEO for attorneys is the work of ranking a law firm in the Google Maps results and in searches with local intent. Google decides those results using relevance, distance and prominence. In practice that means your Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent citations, local pages and links. It does not replace regular SEO. It is usually where consumer law firms get their first results.
Ten checks I run on every firm first. No email needed, and nothing you tick leaves your browser.
Categories, services, description, photos, posts, Q&A and booking link, set up within Google's rules for legal listings.
Name, address and category setup that avoids the usual triggers, and a clean appeal if your listing has already gone down.
A simple ask at the right moment, plus replies that thank clients without breaking confidentiality.
Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale, Super Lawyers, your state and city bar, and the main data sources, all with the same details.
Pages for your real offices and practice areas, with local courts and landmarks, connected to your profile.
Your Maps rank checked across a grid of real points, so progress is measured street by street.
An agency report that says "you rank #2" usually means from one spot, often your own office. This scan shows the same search from 49 real points.
49 points across the city, each one a real search location. The number is where your firm shows in the Google Maps results from that spot.

The Maps top 3 changes every few miles. So the plan is built ring by ring, from your office outward.

Legal is one of the categories Google watches most closely, because fake attorney listings are a real problem. A firm can lose its listing with no warning, and all of its Maps calls with it.
The usual causes are avoidable: a virtual or shared office, keywords added to the business name, duplicate profiles, or a burst of changes all at once.
If it has happened to you, do not make a new profile. Gather proof that the office is real, such as signage photos and a utility bill, and appeal once with a clean setup. Mistakes in the appeal make it harder.

Profile repaired, citations cleaned, tracking on. You can see where you stand across the whole city for the first time.
Rankings start moving near your office. More profile views, more direction requests, the first extra calls.
The strong ring grows outward as reviews, pages and links build up. In big cities, this is where the hardest keywords start to move.
Fresh reviews and posts hold your place. Maps rankings do slip if the work stops and competitors keep going.
“He's mainly the reason I landed my deal with a contractor. If you call him, he picks up.”

Local service companies, not law firms. Legal listings face stricter rules from Google, and I set them up with that in mind.

The profile always stays in your firm's Google account. I only get manager access, which you can remove at any time.
I do the work myselfI'm Muhammad Zohaib Ameer. I have worked in SEO since 2022 for businesses in the US, UK, Canada and the UAE. On legal listings I follow Google's rules to the letter, because one shortcut can cost a firm its whole profile.

“If your profile is already strong, I will tell you, and we will spend the budget elsewhere. Local SEO is the first thing I check, not something I sell to everyone.”
