For law firms that have outgrown directories

Link building for lawyers: links worth having.

You can write the best personal injury page in your city and still sit on page two, because the firms above you have spent years earning links. Here is how a law firm closes that gap without risking its domain or its Bar license.

A healthy law firm link profile

Not one source. A mix.

Illustration of the mix, not a formula. Bars show how many links of each kind a firm tends to have, not how much each one is worth.

  • Why: in tough practice areas, content alone rarely beats established firms.
  • What: local press, bar groups, community work, useful guides, on top of directories.
  • Never: PBNs, link farms or anything you could not show your state Bar.

In one paragraph

What is link building for law firms?

Link building for law firms is earning links to your website from other trusted sites, such as local news, bar associations and legal publications. Google reads these links as votes of confidence. Done well, they lift your practice area pages and your firm's overall authority, and they often send real readers too. Done badly, with bought or spammy links, they can get your site penalized.

Attorney link building, explained

Four rings of links. Most firms stop at the first.

Each ring is harder to earn and harder for a competitor to copy.

  1. DirectoriesAvvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale, Super Lawyers. Needed, and everyone has them, so they only let you compete.
  2. LocalChamber of commerce, local sponsorships, charities, scholarships, community events. A competitor from another city cannot copy these.
  3. LegalState and county bar associations, law school pages, legal publications, CLE speaking pages. Peers vouching for peers.
  4. PressLocal TV and newspaper quotes, expert comment on new laws and public cases. The hardest to earn and the most valuable.

How far behind are you, really?

Link building has no universal number. What matters is the gap to the firms above you and how fast it is closing.

Find both numbers free in Ahrefs' or Semrush's backlink checker. Quality still matters more than count, so treat this as a guide to pace.

Link building services for lawyers

How I earn links for law firms.

Expert comment for journalists

Reporters need a lawyer's view on new laws and local cases. Quick, usable quotes earn real news links, and your firm gets the credit.

Guides that others link to

A plain guide to local court steps, or data on crashes at city intersections. Useful resources earn links on their own for years.

Local sponsorships with a page

Youth sports, charity runs, legal aid. The goodwill comes first, and the page that thanks you is a link only a local firm can get.

Competitor link gap

I list every site linking to the three firms above you, then sort by what you could realistically earn. Then we work through it.

Unlinked mentions

Your firm or attorneys are often named online with no link. A short, polite email fixes many of these.

Link audit first

Before building anything, I check what you already have, including anything a past agency bought. You should know what is there.

The part lawyers must get right

A cheap link can cost you more than rankings.

Every business has to think about Google's spam policies. Lawyers also have to think about their state Bar. ABA Model Rule 7.2 limits giving anything of value for recommending a lawyer's services, and states apply it differently.

So I keep a simple test: could you show this link to your Bar without feeling nervous? A sponsored page marked as sponsored, a news quote or a bar association listing all pass. A paid "best lawyers" list on a stranger's site usually does not.

I am not your ethics counsel, so anything in a grey area goes to you first. You also get a report of every link, including any fee paid for a sponsorship or a directory.

Newspapers and a law book on a dark desk
Press and legal publications are the links that last.
The effect

What links change, and how long it takes.

Months 1 to 2

Audit done, directories cleaned up, outreach list built, first local links in. Rankings rarely move this early.

Months 3 to 5

Google has found and counted the first links. Pages they point to start climbing, mostly for less competitive searches.

Months 6 to 12

The gap to the firms above you closes visibly. Your main practice pages begin to move on harder keywords.

After a year

Good links keep working. A strong link earned once can help for years, which is why I avoid quick and risky ones.

Honest answer

Do you need link building right now?

You need this if

  • Your pages are solid but stuck on page two or three.
  • Firms above you have far more referring domains from relevant sites.
  • You are in a hard practice area such as injury or criminal defense.
  • Your Maps rank stalls even though your profile and reviews are strong.

You do not need this if

  • Your site has technical problems or thin pages. Fix those first, or links are wasted.
  • Your Google profile is unfinished. That is cheaper and faster to fix.
  • You are in a small market where you already rank in the top 3.
  • Someone offers you 100 links for $200. That is not this, and you should walk away.
What I see go wrong

Link mistakes that law firms pay for later.

Stopping at directories

Every competitor has the same listings. They hold your place but do not move you past anyone.

Exact-match anchors everywhere

Twenty links that all say "best car accident lawyer Miami" look bought. Natural links mostly use your firm's name.

Paying monthly for link counts

"10 links a month" tends to mean weak sites. Ask to see the list before you pay.

Never checking old links

A previous agency may have left a spam network pointing at you. You cannot manage what you have not looked at.

Questions lawyers ask

Link building for lawyers FAQ.

Why does a law firm need link building?
In practice areas like injury and criminal defense, content alone rarely beats established competitors. Links from trusted sites tell Google that others vouch for your firm. Strong local and legal links also tend to help you on Maps.
Are legal directories enough?
No. Avvo, Justia, FindLaw and Martindale are worth having, and your competitors already have them, so they only level the field. Local news, bar associations, community work and useful guides are what set a firm apart.
Is buying links safe for a law firm?
Google's spam policies treat paid links meant to manipulate rankings as a violation. Lawyers should also check their state's rules on paying for recommendations, since ABA Model Rule 7.2 limits that. I focus on links earned through outreach, press and real relationships, and I tell you what any placement cost.
How many links does my firm need each month?
It depends on the gap to the firms above you, not a set number. A few strong links beat a pile of weak ones. Use the gap calculator on this page to see your own pace.
What about old spammy links pointing at our site?
Google ignores much of this on its own. I review your link profile first. A disavow is only for clear cases, such as a past paid-link scheme or a manual action, because using it carelessly can hurt you.
How do I measure if link building works?
Watch referring domains from relevant sites, the rankings of the pages those links support, and consultations from those pages. Domain rating alone is a vanity number.
